23/6/19 Milton Common

Milton Common
Standard International Car Rally

This isn’t an event we would have instinctively attended but some friends of ours with a Standard pick-up invited us to join them there. We were placed in the “Open” class (I prefer to call it “Non-Standard” but I expect they are tired of that joke). We were parked amongst some really nice vehicles and were therefore rather stunned to be awarded first place in that class at the prize-giving. Maybe that tenner I slipped the judge helped . . .

It was a very pleasant day, all of the owners we spoke to were very friendly despite our being “outsiders”.

Two nice pre-war amongst those on display – MJ 8225 (of 1935) and 785 JKB (of 1934)

“My Grandad had one of these”. Yes, he did!! A Standard 8 in a familiar dull blue colour. Very nostalgic. SAR 239 dates from 1954, but my grandfather’s was a little later at 1957.

After most vehicles had gone home, we parked our Riley alongside our friends’ 1964 Standard pick-up DAS 988 for a picture together
